8tracking

GEM- Not one to shy away from internet trends- has decides to join 8 tracks.

The custom internet radio site 8tracks has grown in popularity in recent weeks and so when our Entertainment editor introduced it to us as part of an article idea, we decided to investigate. Well our investigation led to fascination, which led to us joining the site.

So what can you expect from our channel on 8tracks?
Look for playlists of articles written, such as the exam playlist by Matt Cryer, as well as periodical playlists compiled by members of the GEM team. These playlists will include their favourite songs of the moment, their favourite songs by a particular artist or even just new music they want to share.

Its our Birthday

Its our Birthday and a time for presents and reflections.

First the present:
We are proud to announce that we will be moving. yup. moving! we will still be available on globaledgemedia.yolasite.com but will now be using our very own co.za address
So for all your GEM news, the place to visit is www.globaledgemedia.co.za

It's been a long time coming and with the recent growth in readership, it's come at a great time for the team. A lot of work went into the new layout and porting of articles across the two sites and I'm glad to see the finished product looking so great.

And the highlights:
Looking back at the site over the past year has allowed us me to really understand how far we've come. The site was suppose to be just a blog for the Journalism class to read and contribute to but as our minds grew around the idea so did the site. It's interesting to think that from that small meeting between Chris and myself a great idea and website would grow.

I have to thank, from the bottom of my heart, a few people. First of all Chris who didn't let up on the idea and helped it grow wings. Stefan and Elna who encouraged us and gave us all the feedback and support to build our confidence in the idea. Zodwa and Amy, although neither of them are here to celebrate the one year celebrations, their personality and hard work are ingrained in the identity of the site. From brainstorming name ideas to colour schemes i can honestly say this site would not be anything close to what it is without them.

Best moment has to be Chris's comment on his own article. He wrote a piece on Americas next top model where he exposed corruption in its decision to crown Sasha as America's next top model. He then ,2 days later, went on to the comments section and wrote "OMG! I LOVE IT. Saleisha you cheater!"   we all had a good laugh!

Well there's many more memories attached to this great site but this will have to do for now. Thank you all for the support you have given me and the team and here's to many more successes in the future.

Going Viral

They say Word of mouth is the way to be effective in social networking. Well if the future of promotion is on social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter, then we better start opening our big mouth

That we did and with alarming and joyous consequences.

Last month we spread the word on twitter and gained 40 + followers. Yesterday we extended the "word of mouth" campaign to Facebook and as we speak are only a handful of "likes" away from 100 "like"rs.
That is phenomenal bearing in mind that 48 hours ago we had only 14 "likes" on Facebook.
As we write there is a contest between Twitter and Facebook to see who can get to 100 "likes"/follows first.

That in turn caused a huge jump in traffic to the site and were smiling like champs.

so what do we do now? We feed the masses by continuing to provide professional content that relates to them and their world.

Here's to a future brighter then our vision

Day 1. new site. new beginnings

Today we started our first full day of development on the new site. After a few early, and persistent, teething problems we finally got a site that’s looking fresh and new while still sticking close to its traditional roots.

The challenge has always been to find a balance between the artisic funk, which comes from being a student site, with professionalism which begs to be taken seriously. In this new site we feel we have achieved that brilliance and can’t wait to share it.

Look forward to a site more colourful, more interactive, more clean and most of all more eye candy.
So now that we have the foundation set, the following weeks and sessions will see content being sourced to the site, small tweaks being implemented, testing of functions and eventually integration with the yola site’s and social media platforms.

All of this ready to launch SOON

It's all marketing you know

innovation gets you nowhere without promotion and execution, the charming triplets of success.
Edison had it, Steve jobs had it and Google oozes it but not it's GEM's chance to show that we got it.

We are  excited to bring you the latest news on our own site but a big part of the move is to make sure that our brand is strengthened. Its with this in mind that we met with our marketing guru Ismail Fadal to create a Marketing startegy. The meeting was one of the best GEM has held and produced alot of ideas that will be executed in the following weeks.

These ideas include:
More Visibility on Campus
Promotions
Social Media growth and networking
Homesite appeal
Staff recruitment
